Arsenal are looking for a midfielder in the January transfer window, and Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz fits the bill.
Mikel Arteta is a known admirer of the Brazilian and is expected to make a move for his man amidst Thomas Partey’s injury struggles. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has claimed he is The Gunners’ “top target.”
Luiz has started the season in superb form under Unai Emery, with a series of scintillating performances in midfield. The Brazil international is adept at playing in a number 6 or a number 8 role, and would provide competition and cover for Declan Rice.
Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Luiz would be a fantastic addition to the squad, speaking to Sky Sports he said “Douglas Luiz is the most underrated player in the Premier League. No-one talks about him. He turns up for Aston Villa week in, week out.
He’s box to box, he scores goals and passes the ball extremely well. He’s just a very good player. Villa have got a good team. They have a lot of underrated players.”
Arsenal had two bids for Luiz rejected last summer, and he subsequently agreed terms on a new long term deal. A fee of around £60M has been touted to secure Luiz’s services – with Arteta willing to sell up to three players to get the deal done.
Will Luiz be playing his football in north London in the near future? It will be interesting to see how this story develops.
