Youth Spotlight: Ethan Nwaneri

Ethan Nwaneri is a name that has been exciting football fans, particularly supporters of Arsenal, for the last couple of seasons. The 16-year-old has a huge reputation and has impressed at youth level for both club and country.

Early Career

Nwaneri joined Arsenal at just nine years of age. The London born midfielder was already playing for Arsenal’s U18 squad at 14. His performances drew comparisons to former Hale End graduates Jack Wilshere and Bukayo Saka. In September 2022, Nwaneri became the youngest ever player to appear in the Premier League, after coming off the bench against Brentford.

Style of Play

Nwaneri is adept at playing in multiple midfield and attacking roles, but he has been heralded as a future number eight. He is a powerful runner with a deft touch and an eye for a pass. A feature of his game is his dribbling from deep positions, he is able to advance his team up the pitch with driving runs. Nwaneri is also capable defensively and possesses a high work rate.

What to expect

Although still very young, Nwaneri is expected to develop into a top midfielder and establish himself as a force for Arsenal and England. He has already agreed to signing a professional contract on his 17th birthday, indicating The Gunners’ confidence in his potential. Nwaneri will no doubt want to feature more often for the first team, and early signs suggest he will – the former St. John’s school boy is certainly one to watch.
