Football and social media go hand in hand. Whether you’re after some footy highlights or simply want to check in on your favourite players, X (formerly Twitter) is the home of the latest goings on within the beautiful game.
Down the years we’ve been treated to some absolutely cracking tweets by high profile footballers. Before the days of social media management, players themselves would take to the popular platform to express their thoughts. Let’s check out some of the funniest tweets posted by footballers.
This blunder by Victor Anichebe has gone down in internet history! Clearly meaning to send this to whoever was in charge of his account, the former Sunderland striker began his post with “can you tweet something like.” What a time to let your guard down eh? The Nigerian was left with egg on his face after fans quickly pointed out his error.
Remember this classic? The lack of context in this is hilarious! Legendary England and Man Utd striker Wayne Rooney aimed a tweet at teammate Rio Ferdinand, asking if he needed picking up. We’re still not quite sure why this tweet came about, but we can only assume Wazza was considering a new profession – taxi driver perhaps?
One of the main benefits of X is potentially getting in touch with celebrities you’d otherwise have no chance of contacting. This is evidenced by Louis Saha’s famous tweet, tagging iconic author JK Rowling and asking for a quick word. I wonder what he had in mind? An idea for a new novel? Maybe he wanted to be involved in the latest instalment of the Harry Potter series? I guess we’ll never know!
Ever been stuck for what to tweet? Wanyama has. Fairly new to the social media platform, Wanyama wanted to engage with his followers but wasn’t sure what to post. I mean, a Q&A would’ve done fine, but Big Vic opted for a different approach. He let his followers know he had spaghetti and he enjoyed it… yep. Mind Blowing stuff. Cheers for that pal!
Phil Neville, brother of Manchester United stalwart Gary Neville, couldn’t have imagined the response he’d receive to a seemingly innocuous tweet. After informing us of his bike ride around the lake, Wayne Rooney would reply in such a brutal manner, stating that his former colleague was “boring the life out of him.” Ouch.
Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku was shocked to find trick or treaters at his door, claiming it was the first time it’d happened to him. When the official FIFA account asked him the burning question that was on all of our minds, he replied he’d given them KitKats. In fairness if I was one of the trick or treaters I’d be buzzing, who doesn’t love a KitKat?!
You can feel the excitement radiating from Ashley Cole with this tweet! After joining the site, he decided to tag grammy award-winning rapper Drake to alert him of his arrival. The fact he said “it’s me ash cole” indicates they met previously, or does Cole just fancy himself that much? Hard to tell!
This zinger from ex Leicester defender Robert Huth is comedy gold! Whilst going back and forth with his former teammate Jon Walters, the German international insinuated one of Walter’s shots would result in a throw-in for the opposition. Hopefully the Irishman applied cold water to that unbelievable burn!
