We all know Injuries are part of football, as is the case with all sports. Top level athletes have intense training and playing schedules, so naturally they will pick up knocks along the way.
Some injuries are gruesome, some are unfortunate, some are innocuous, and some are just downright strange. With that being said, here’s a list of five of the freakiest injuries to ever happen to football players;
Dave Beasant
Ex-Chelsea goalie Dave Beasant’s season preparation took an unusual turn after accidentally dropping a 2kg jar of salad cream on his big toe. In the mood for a snack, the 6 foot 4 ‘keeper took to the kitchen to make a sandwich and never could have imagined what was to come. This seemingly harmless incident severed tendons in his big toe, resulting in him missing 8 weeks of the season.
Marco Asensio
In another peculiar injury saga, Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio found himself sidelined for the opening match of the 2017-2018 Champions League due to an infected pimple. The cause of the infection you ask? Asensio’s attempt to shave his legs. Yes, you read correctly. Asensio fancied a bit more aerodynamism, but instead it cost him a group stage opener… vanity eh?
Ever Banega
Now with this particular injury, the recipient, in this case Ever Banega, should count himself lucky. Whilst at Valencia, the Argentine midfielder managed to run himself over at a petrol station. Banega forgot to engage the handbrake (as you do) while refueling, leading to his car rolling back and trapping his left leg. The result: a fractured tibia and fibula, requiring surgery and sidelining Banega for six months. Ouch.
Darius Vassell
Former Aston Villa striker Vassell got injured doing a bit of DIY at home. You’d be forgiven for thinking he hurt himself by putting up a shelf or building a shed – but you’d be very wrong.
Back in 2003, the England international opted for a rather unconventional remedy for a troublesome blister. Armed with a versatile electric drill, Vassell thought he could drill through the nail to drain the blister and quickly play again pain-free. However, this, let’s call it, unique attempt went awry. Vassell suffered a blood infection that required proper medical intervention and led to even more time in the physio room.
Frenkie De Jong
Barcelona midfield maestro Frenkie De Jong suffered quite a bizarre injury that looked like it may rule him out for an indefinite period of time. The 24-year-old showed off a swollen hand which was the result of a… *drum roll please* BEE STING! 🐝
De Jong had fans concerned after posting a picture on social media of a ballooned hand, with many thinking it could be a broken bone. But he allayed fears by stating one of nature’s honey providers stung him. Of all the luck.
